Goûters maison faciles : 8 idées à préparer avec les enfants

At 4:30 PM, hunger always hits at the same time… Instead of store-bought biscuit packets, why not prepare a snack with the kids? It’s more economical, you know exactly what’s in it, and it’s a great moment to share. Here are 8 easy homemade snack ideas to prepare together with children aged 6 to 12.

No-bake snacks

1. Fruit skewers

Mango, banana, strawberry, pineapple, grapes: the child cuts the soft fruit with a rounded-tip knife and builds their skewers on wooden picks. A squeeze of lime juice so the fruit doesn't brown, and it’s ready.

2. Tropical fruit salad

The adult cuts the hard fruit (pineapple, mango, papaya), the child cuts the banana, mixes everything together, and adds some freshly squeezed orange juice. A touch of cinnamon or vanilla, and you’re in the tropics.

3. Grenadia juice

Passion fruit, called "grenadia" in Haiti, makes a fragrant juice that kids love. The adult cuts the fruit in half, the child scoops it out with a spoon. Strain it, add fresh water, a little sugar, and a splash of lime juice.

4. Fun toast

Whole-grain bread, cream cheese or nut butter, and fruit to draw faces, suns, or animals. Kids love creating their own toast.

5. DIY yogurt cups

Plain yogurt, chopped fruit, some rolled oats, and a spoonful of honey (avoid for children under one year old): the child layers their cup, just like a pastry chef’s dessert.

6. Banana muffins

Very ripe bananas mashed with a fork by the child, flour, an egg, a bit of sugar and baking powder: they mix it, fill the molds, and the adult takes care of the oven. Perfect for using up overripe bananas.

7. Pen patat, the Haitian sweet potato cake

This moist sweet potato cake, spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, is a classic Haitian snack. The child measures, pours, and mixes the batter, greases the pan, and adds raisins. The adult grates the sweet potato and monitors the baking. A snack full of flavor, and a delicious way to eat a vegetable!

8. French toast

Yesterday’s bread, soaked in a mixture of milk, egg, and cinnamon prepared by the child. The adult browns it in the pan. Zero-waste, quick, and always a hit.

Our tips for a successful snack time

  • Pair a fruit with a starch (bread, cereal, homemade cake) to keep them full until dinner.
  • Prepare in advance: a cake made on Sunday can be used for several snacks throughout the week.
  • Let the child choose between two or three ideas: they will be more motivated to participate.
  • Pay attention to allergens if you have guests over: eggs, milk, nuts, gluten…
